I organise occasional ‘artwalks’, where up to 12 participants take a circular walk, usually between two
and four kilometres, taking photograhs, making sketches and collecting small items of interest along
the way. Back at my studio (a converted barn), the participants discuss their experience of the walk
and work individually to explore their ideas further. By focussing on the content and the ideas, they
are free from concerns of ability or previous knowledge of techniques. The results have manifested
themselves as drawings, paintings, constructions, photographs, digitally-manipulated images, poetry
and short pieces of prose.
The image shown here is of a workshop led by me to create a backdrop to a
presentation and performance by young people from
11 different European Union nations in the summer
I also run workshops on the theme of well-being, making use of raw, found materials from the natural environment. These are incorporated into interactive sessions with drumming, song and celebratory performance, and aim to help participants understand more about the natural world.
As part of the Words by the Water Festival at the Theatre by the Lake, Keswick, I ran demonstrations and taster sessions for the Sky Arts Den, using charcoal.
